Irish win Section 3 boys swimming and diving championship
The Rosemount boys swimming and diving team won the Class 2A, Section 3 meet last weekend with 406 team points.
It's the fourth-straight section title for the Irish. Eagan was second with 327.5 points.
In the process, Rosemount advanced several individuals to the state meet, to be held this weekend at the University of Minnesota.
All three Irish relays advanced, and eight individuals earned state-qualifying times.
The highlight for Rosemount might have been the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Irish set pool and section records with a time of 1 minute, 27.95 seconds with Sheldon Hatlen, Luke Dowell, Jake Stern and Conor Manning teaming up.
Braden McCormick, Stern, Dowell and David Baker combined to win the 200 medley relay. Hatlen, Tyler Lawson, Manning and David Baker took second in the 400 freestyle relay, and earned a state-qualifying time.
Stern won the 200 individual medley and later broke the school record in the 100 breastroke while taking first place.
Manning and Dowell placed third and ninth, respectively in the 50 freestyle, but qualified for state based on time.
Dowell later won the 100 butterfly.
Baker was second in the 100 freestyle.
Andrew Urness broke through in the 500 freestyle, placing fifth with a state-qualifying time.
Dan Monaghan was fourth in diving and will compete at state.
Tami Carlson was named the section assistant coach of the year, and Patti Wagner was the section coach of the year.
