Irish football returns to state
There wasn't much offense in Rosemount's Section final football game against Stillwater. But for the Irish, there was just enough.
Rosemount went to Stillwater Friday night and beat the top-seeded Ponies 7-6 in a Class 6A crossover game that pitted teams from different sections against each other.
Stillwater got on the board first and second in the first half, but couldn't manage more than a field goal either time. The Ponies got a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter and another field goal in the second.
The Irish scored the game's final points on an eight-yard touchdown with 2:33 left in the first half. Rosemount fumbled the ball into the endzone on the play and recovered to score.
Solid defense in the second half preserved the win for the Irish.
Rosemount will open state tournament play against No. 1 Edina at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Metrodome. The Hornets are 9-1 on the season. The winner of that game will play either No. 4 Prior Lake or No. 5 Lakeville North at 7 p.m. Nov. 15.
