Horton takes over as pastor at St. John's
A year ago when Christopher Horton learned he would serve the St. John's Lutheran Church congregation in Rosemount, he was excited.
"It was good to know I had a place in God's plan," said Horton. But he had to look at a map to see exactly where Rosemount was.
Horton grew up in Columbia Heights and then lived in Brainerd, but he wasn't familiar with Rosemount. He was happy to get to return to Minnesota, though.
For the last year, Horton has worked with retired St. John's pastor John Moe to transition the church to his leadership. The goal was to make the transition as seamless as possible and Horton said he feels like that was accomplished. Moe, who served the church for 21 years, retired at the end of July.
St. John's is Horton's first assignment as a pastor. Horton attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Before attending Concordia Horton worked in printing in Brainerd.
Horton has been married to his wife, Lori, for 19 years. The couple has two daughters.
Horton will admit he wasn't much of a student as a younger man. Over the years though, several pastors said he should consider going to seminary.
"I kept putting it off," said Horton.
Then he had the opportunity to take a college class through a state program. Horton thought he would take it, do poorly and that would be that. But then something funny happened, he performed well and liked it. So he took a second class.
"I started with the thinking that the doors would close and that would be that. But lo and behold the door didn't and here I am," said Horton.
He's glad to be in Rosemount too. Horton doesn't plan any major changes for the church. He hopes to nurture relationships within the church and to continue teaching what Christ has done for mankind.
St. John's Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Horton said they have a congregation of nearly 200. The church, which began in 1911, is located off of County Road 42 on Blaine Ave.
