Gymnasts finish fourth among the elites at Eastview's Abby Invitational
Placing fourth at last week's Abby Invitational at Eastview High School, the Rosemount gymnastics team felt more mixed feelings.
To place in the top half of an elite meet with several ranked teams can make the Irish feel good about their prospects for this season. But at the same time, the team performance was inconsistent.
Rosemount knows it can and will improve as the season wears on, offering the biggest piece of optimism.
"It's almost like a state meet with so many top-level teams," Irish coach Jason Passeri said. "There are so many good teams, it's nice to see us finish fourth. You're not usually happy with a fourth, but that's the type of meet this is. We could have been as high as first or second and as low as ninth. So to get fourth, you have to be pretty happy with that."
Rosemount scored a 139.4 to place fourth out of 12 teams. Roseville won the team title with a 142.7. The Irish finished ahead of strong conference and section teams such as Eden Prairie, Eagan, Woodbury and Eastview.
"It's a nice meet there with six or seven teams that are making the top 10 in the state," Passeri said. "You see these nice big scores from other teams and you don't know where you are until you're against them with the same judges."
With 60 competitors in each event, Rosemount boasted several top-15 finishers.
On the vault, Katie Murgic placed sixth with a score of 9.2. Claire Holtz had a 9.0 to finish 12th and Claire Judeh was 14th with an 8.95.
On the bars, Holtz was the lone Irish gymnast in the top 15. She scored an 8.7 to place 12th.
"The bars did not go so well again," Passeri said.
Macy Stearns led Rosemount on the balance beam, placing ninth with an 8.95.
The Irish again had a standout floor routine with the highest team finish at the meet.
Murgic was second on the floor with a 9.4. Judeh was sixth with a 9.15.
Holtz finished 12th in the all-around with a 34.55. Murgic was 15th after scoring a 34.5.
Rosemount competes in a Farmington meet on Dec. 30 after eight days away from competition.
