The Irish opened their season with a victory at Simley for the 10th straight year on Saturday, scoring 138.3 points to top runner-up Bloomington Jefferson’s 127.05. Hudson (Wis.) was third with 125.65 points.

Returning state qualifier Josie Schlie picked up where she left off a season ago, placing first in two events and winning the all-around with a score of 36.5. Schlie set the pace in the floor exercise with a 9.45 and in the uneven bars with an 8.85. She added second-place score of 9.4 in the vault and a second-place 8.8 despite a fall in the balance beam.

Teammate Abby Nelson, also a returning state meet performer, was the only Irish gymnast to stick her balance beam routine. She won the event with a score of 9.2. Nelson added a third-place 8.8 in the floor exercise and a seventh-place showing in the bars en route to a fifth-place all-around finish.

The Irish swept all four events as Meghan Creese added a winning 9.45 in the vault. Betsy Martinson placed eighth in the event and helped Rosemount to its highest event score of the meet, a 36.4.

Shannon McCoy placed in all four events and finished second behind Schlie in the all-around with a total score of 34.65. McCoy was second in the floor exercise (8.95), third in the bars, fourth in the vault (9.0) and fifth in the beam (8.4).

Other top-10 finishes were turned in by Cami Marx (4th, 8.7) and Rachel Schow (5th, 8.65) in the floor exercise and Kidron Stromwall (8th) in the beam.

The Irish compete again Tuesday when they host Lakeville South.
