It's been quite a first week of the season for the Rosemount girls tennis team.
The Irish, 18-5 last season, reeled off seven straight victories in a three-day span to start the 2011 campaign. They opened the season last Wednesday with a first-place finish at the Buffalo Tournament, then followed that up by sweeping Bloomington Kennedy in their South Suburban Conference opener on Thursday. The team chalked up three more victories while placing first at the Hastings Tournament Friday, then capped off the week by winning medals in three out of five flights at the highly-competitive Northfield Doubles Tournament on Saturday.
The doubles team of Layna Mestad and Abby Kohagen started the season with seven straight wins, then won the consolation championship in the third flight at Northfield. Rachel Hoffman and Monica McDonald also teamed up to claim the consolation title in Flight 5.
"I am very excited about our potential this season and we started out this season solid with two tournament wins and a conference win," Rosemount coach Dana Beck said. "We have a solid lineup this year, including three ninth-graders (Kohagen, Hoffman and McDonald) who made the varsity team this year and are adding to our depth."
Returning state qualifiers Virginia Norder and Ally Baker, as well as Mariah McGivern, all started the season with seven straight singles victories. Baker and Norder teamed up to place third in Flight 1 at Northfield the tandems of Megan Harrington and Kirsten Hoffman and McGivern and Emily Harrington each came in fourth.
The Irish hosted Burnsville on Tuesday and travel to Eagan this afternoon to take on a Wildcats team they have collided with in the section finals the last two years.
