Coming off a fourth-place finish at the state tournament last fall, the Rosemount girls tennis team picked up right where it left off last week.

The Irish opened the season by winning three straight matches - including a 7-0 sweep in their South Suburban Conference opener against Bloomington Kennedy - before winning the Hastings Tournament Friday.

The busy stretch of games the Irish dubbed Sunburn Week was actually pared down due to rain outs Wednesday against Ricorri at the Buffalo Tournament and Saturday at the Northfield Doubles Tournament.

"We had a good first week," Rosemount coach Dana Beck said. "We have a good team this year and had some competitive matches at the Hastings Tournament. We really played tough during tie-break situations and came up with a lot of wins in close matches, which is good to see and helped us win the tournament."

The Irish opened the tournament with an 8-0 sweep of Woodbury. Singles players Virginia Norder, Ally Baker, Emily Harrington and Rachel Hoffmann all won their matches, as did the doubles teams of Monica McDonald and Abby Kohagen, Gretchen McDonald and Rachel Olson, Kierstin Johnson and Kourtney Johnson and Rian Robertson and Kyla Bills.

Strong doubles play allowed the Irish to forge a 4-4 tie with Eastview in the second round. Victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 doubles made up for the Lightning taking three out of four singles matches.

Norder scored the team's lone singles win.

The Irish closed out the tournament with a 7-1 decision over host Hastings. Norder and Baker led a singles sweep with a pair of easy wins and Harrington and Hoffmann held on for close victories in the other two matches.

The Irish are back in action this week with matches against ranked teams from Wayzata and Eagan.

"We're looking forward to seeing how we compete against those competitive teams," Beck said.
