Girls swimming and diving: Wild Card berth sends swimmer to state
Rosemount is going back to the True Team State Meet.
A year after winning their first True Team section title, the Irish advanced as a wild card with a second-place finish at Saturday's Section 3AA True Team meet at the Rosemount Middle School pool.
The Irish led through nine events, but East Ridge surged ahead over the final three to win the section title, 1,007-980.
Rosemount opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay as Claire Tolan, Olivia Johnston, Megan Wenman and Madeline Ryan combined to post a one-second margin of victory. East Ridge took the early lead, however, by placing its four relays fourth, sixth, ninth and 13th.
The Irish responded by dominating the 200 freestyle. Megan Wenman won the event and teammates Tolan and Abby Tesch followed in third and fourth, respectively. Megan Jelinksi placed sixth.
Then came back-to-back 2-4 finishes for the hosts, first from Katie Garrity and Johnston in the 200 individual medley, and then from Grace Herron and Ryan in the 50 freestyle.
After a second-place finish from Sawyer Murray in the 1-meter dive and a 1-5-6 showing from Wenman, Tesch and Herron in the 100 butterfly, the Irish held a 460-447 advantage in the team race.
East Ridge answered by placing four swimmers in the top seven to score 80 points in the 100 freestyle and take a 527-515 lead.
Rosemount closed the gap with a 1-4-6 finish in the 500 freestyle (Garrity, Jelinksi and Jessica Troen) and then took the lead back one final time by placing three relays in the top seven in the 200 freestyle relay. Ryan, Johnston, Herron and Garrity joined forces for a second-place finish in that event, helping the hosts move ahead, 735-729.
East Ridge moved back ahead for good by placing four in the top nine in the 100 backstroke. Tolan finished second in the event and Carissa Boerboom was sixth.
Johnston followed with a fourth-place swim in the 100 breaststroke and Rosemount closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay. Herron, Carrity, Tolan and Wenman combined to top runner-up East Ridge by four seconds.
East Ridge placed all four of its 400 freestyle relays in the top nine as it clinched the meet with 150 more points. The Irish's four relays combined for 132 points and left them 27 points out of the lead.
The team competes at its second straight True Team State Meet Saturday night at the University of Minnsesota Aquatics Center. The Irish finished ninth in last year's debut.
