Following the preliminaries of the Class 2A, Section 3 girls swimming and diving meet, Rosemount coach Jim Ertl couldn't wait to provide highlights.

His Irish had given the coach many reasons to gloat.

The longtime coach said it was one of the best meets he had seen.

Then Rosemount went out in the finals and continued the trend.

"Section prelims were phenomenal," Ertl said. "It was a pretty good finals, too. Every girl had a lifetime best in that meet. Every one of them. I can't ask for more than that."

The Irish finished fourth overall as a team. McKenzie Tolan and Beth Wenman each advanced individually to this week's state meet in two events, and Rosemount advanced two relay teams.

Tolan returns to the state meet. She placed fourth in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races, but met state time cuts in each.

She just missed the school record in the 200. She has the second fastest time in school history in the 200 and third fastest in the 500.

"We were kind of expecting it, but you never know," Ertl said. "She did a really nice job there. Of course, the two girls ahead of her might be first and second in the state."

Wenman was sixth in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 backstroke, qualifying for each event.

Rosemount was second in the 200 freestyle with Colleen Baker, Nicole Floersch, Teija Normandeau and Tolan combining to reach the state meet.

Ertl also has the option of electing other swimmers for the relay, which could include Lynette Griffith, Wenman, Elyse Griffith and Julie Normandeau.

Tolan, Wenman, Floersch, and Baker placed fourth in the 400 relay to give the Irish another opportunity to swim at the state meet at the University of Minnesota, with Ertl again having the chance to choose his relay team.

Katie Heinsen, after going her fastest in the preliminaries, did so again, placing seventh in the 200 IM and eight in the backstroke.
