Girls swimming and diving: No wild card needed for the Irish
Rosemount didn’t need a wild card berth to extend its streak of trips to the Class 2A True Team state meet.
The Irish punched their third straight state ticket on Saturday, winning nine events — including all three relays — and turning in 29 top-10 finishes in winning the Section 3AA True Team title at Rosemount Middle School.
A 1-3 finish in the 400 freestyle relay closed out a 1,178 1/2-1,157 1/2 victory over runner-up East Ridge.
A year ago, Rosemount settled for a wild card berth into the state meet after being edged by East Ridge at the section meet.
Megan Wenman and Katie Garrity were each part of four first-place finishes for the Irish. They joined Grace Herron and Cassandra Hutchins for a winning swim in the 200 freestyle relay and came back three events later to team up with Herron and Olivia Johnston for a first-place effort in the 400 freestyle relay. Wenman added individual golds in the 100 and 200 freestyle, while Garrity bested the field in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
Herron netted a third first-place performance of her own in the 50 freestyle.
Johnston, Michelle Simms, Jessica Troen and Abby Tesch opened the meet by edging Woodbury by seven-hundredths of a second to win the 200 medley relay. Tesch then placed third in the 200 freestyle and Johnston followed that up with a third-place swim in the 200 IM.
Tesch later added to the Irish’s total with another first-place finish, this time in the 100 butterfly. Just before that, Madeline Ryan placed fifth in the 50 freestyle and Sawyer Murray earned a close second in the 1-meter dive.
Hutchins placed 10th in the 200 IM and came back to lead a 3-6-9 Irish showing behind Wenman in the 100 freestyle.
Simms returned to the pool to lead a 4-8-9-10 Rosemount effort in the 100 backstroke, and also teamed up with Ryan, Tesch and Troen for a third-place swim in the 400 freestyle relay.
Johnston and Amanda O’Brien added a 2-6 finish in the 100 breaststroke and Troen was eighth in the 500 freestyle.
The Class 2A True Team state meet is Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
