Girls swimming and diving: Irish send 13 to state
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

The Rosemount girls swimming and diving team cleaned up like Adele at the Grammys at Friday's Section 3AA Championships.

The Irish won section titles in eight of 12 events and qualified 10 individuals and all three relays for this weekend's Class 2A state meet as they defended their section team title 499 1/2-361 1/2 over runner-up East Ridge at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake.

"The girls worked extremely hard all season with no breaks. We just kept on working. Us coaches knew the team had a lot of talent and if we could keep them working hard it would pay off," said Rosemount coach Tami Carlson, whose team qualified 10 events last year. "We had girls drop a significant amount of time from their season best at the meet. This is the hardest working team I have ever coached. They are pretty amazing."

Claire Tolan, Olivia Johnston, Megan Wenman and Katie Garrity will each compete in four events at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Wenman and Garrity were the only ones to capture four section titles. An All-Stater as an eighth-grader last year in the 100 freestyle, Wenman swept both the 100 and 200 freestyles and swam legs of the first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. She joined Tolan, Johnson and Michelle Simms in the meet-opening 200 medley and teamed up with Tolan, Garrity and Grace Herron in the 400 freestyle relay.

Garrity, Johnston, Herron and Madeline Ryan rounded out the Irish relay sweep with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay and Garrity tacked on a pair of individual section championships, winning the 500 freestyle and joining Johnston for a 1-2 finish in the 200 individual medley.

Tolan added an individual title in the 100 backstroke and qualified for state behind Wenman in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish that bested the standard.

Johnston closed out the meet by qualifying individually with a fourth-place finish against a talented field in the 100 breaststroke.

A pair of divers got the qualifying started Thursday night. Sawyer Murray extended her season with a second-place finish and Claire Judeh was right behind in third.

Herron just missed qualifying for state in two more events. She was third in the 50 freestyle and finished 4-5 along with teammate Abby Tesch in the 100 butterfly. Tesch added a fourth-place swim in the 200 freestyle.

Johnston tacked on a fourth-place effort in the 100 breaststroke and Jessica Troen contributed a pair of fifth-place showings in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Carissa Boerboom was sixth in the 100 backstroke, giving the Irish three finishers in the top six, and Simms and Ryan supplied seventh-place performances in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, respectively.

The Class 2A diving prelims begin tonight and the swim prelims are tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis. Carlson said her team's goal is to finish in the top 12 after placing 22nd a year ago.

"This is the most qualifying events we have ever had. However, we need as many as possible to qualify in the top 16 to participate in finals and score points," she said.
