Girls soccer: Irish earn No. 4 seed in 3AA
Rosemount coach Kevin Adams was pleased with the way his team responded after falling behind 4-0 early in the second half of last Thursday's regular season finale at No. 3 (Class 2A) Eagan.
The Irish managed to score a goal of their own (Hannah Halterman on a pass from Becca Newman), control the ball for much of the last 20 minutes and build some positive momentum despite an eventual 4-1 loss to the South Suburban Conference runners-up.
"I was proud of the girls because they never quit in the game," he said. "Character is important and how teams react to adversity is equally important. These girls answered that question on both counts. They played their hearts out to the very end."
The Irish finished the regular season with a 10-4-2 record, good enough to earn fifth place out of 10 teams in the SSC and a No. 4 seed in the Section 3AA Tournament. They hosted a fifth-seeded Hastings team they defeated 1-0 earlier in the season Tuesday night at Irish Stadium. The winner takes on Eagan tonight in the semifinals in Eagan.
"We enter section play feeling good about our season and how we played overall," Adams said. "Like many teams, we had those games where we play well and then games where we didn't play well, but that will happen. We have played well down the stretch heading into sections and we hope to play well at the right time."
The Irish played one of their best games of the season in last Tuesday's home finale, battling to a 0-0 draw with seventh-ranked Eastview at Irish Stadium.
"The seniors had not beaten Eastview and had something to prove," Adams said. "The Irish found the emotion that is necessary in big games and raised their effort level another notch."
Goalkeeper Kate Mallory stopped all 15 Eastview shots to preserve her fifth shutout of the season.
