Girls lacrosse: Irish split games last week
District 196 rivals Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eastview have proven to be an evenly-matched trio this season.
Rosemount split a pair of contests with its South Suburban Conference neighbors last week, defeating Eastview 16-12 on Tuesday and falling 12-9 Thursday at Apple Valley. The loss evened the Irish with Eastview at 6-3 overall, while Apple Valley improved its record to 5-2.
"The Irish players are giving a great effort and fulfilling each of their roles very well in what is turning out to be a very competitive schedule," Rosemount coach Jeff Smith said.
After three strong quarters of offense, some untimely turnovers cost the Irish in the second half at Apple Valley. The team mustered just three goals over the final 24 minutes and the Eagles maintained their 8-6 halftime lead in a three-goal victory.
Maddie Johnson led the Irish with six goals. Shaniah Anderson scored twice and Sydney Lubeley once. Cassie Miller finished with three assists.
Charley Belden finished with 12 saves on 24 Apple Valley shots on goal.
The Irish deposited a season-high 12 first-half goals into the net in last Tuesday's win over Eastview at Irish Stadium.
Anderson led a balanced attack with six goals. Johnson scored five and handed out an assist and Miller found the net four times. Madi Lubeley added a goal and two assists and Sydney Lubeley had one assist.
Eastview answered with eight goals of its own in the second half, but never got closer than four.
"We played as well as we have all year during the first half taking a 12-4 lead. Ball control off of Maddie Johnson draws was dominant and the passing game was near perfect," Smith said. "Ball control wasn't quite as effective and Eastview picked it up a notch during the second half, but our players kept their composure in keeping Eastview at bay and earning a terrific victory."
Belden finished with eight saves.
The Irish hosted Eagan Tuesday night and are back at Irish Stadium tonight against Lakeville North. The regular season concludes next week with contests against Lakeville South and Bloomington Kennedy.
