Girls lacrosse: Irish rally for back-to-back wins
They're no longer the Wild Irish, but they had a wild first week of the season.
The Rosemount girls lacrosse team started their first solo season after several years as a co-op with Eagan by rallying for a pair of tightly-contested victories last week. The Irish got a game-winning goal from Maddie Johnson with 1:04 remaining to edge East Ridge 10-9 in their program debut last Tuesday at Irish Stadium, and then finished last Thursday night's game against Park of Cottage Grove with five unanswered goals to secure a 13-11 overtime decision.
"Both of our games were nail-biters, but it was a fun, competitive way to kick off the season," Rosemount coach Jeff Smith said. "We as coaches stressed the need to get off to a good start and the girls responded very well, coming back in both games."
Park led 11-8 early in the fourth quarter when Johnson scored her seventh goal of the game on an assist from Cassie Miller to make it a two-goal game with 8:54 to play. Miller knocked in her lone goal of the game with 4:18 remaining and Johnson scored again to tie it at 11-11 with 2:17 to go.
Johnson put her career-high ninth goal into the net 32 seconds into overtime to give the Irish the lead for good. Shaniah Anderson's third goal of the game capped the scoring 1:35 into the six-minute overtime and goaltender Alex Raeth (10 saves) preserved the lead.
A defensive stand of nearly 11 minutes kept East Ridge stuck at eight goals and gave the Irish time to rally in their home opener.
Miller's second goal of the game tied the score at 8-8 with 6:16 remaining and Johnson capped off a five-goal effort with a game-winner with just over a minute remaining.
Shannon Swanson, Meghan Tuccitto and Bethann Dugstad each added goals for the Irish. Raeth finished with nine saves.
