Girls hockey: Rally falls just short in section
Time ran out on Rosemount’s comeback attempt in Monday’s Section 3AA play-in game in Woodbury.
The ninth-seeded Irish fell behind 4-0 by the middle of the second period, but battled back with three third-period goals before falling 5-4 to No. 8-seeded Woodbury at Bielenberg Ice Arena. The young Irish’s 12th straight loss put an end to a frustrating 1-25 season, while Woodbury’s first win in 11 tries since late December advanced it to face top-seeded Burnsville in the second round.
Rosemount was out-shot just 21-16 in the second period against Woodbury, but the Royals scored four goals in the period, including three in a span of just over two minutes to push their advantage to 4-0. Hannah Enright finally ended the run with a power-play goal at the 11:29 mark to get the Irish on the board. Ashlee Humble provided the assist.
In the third, the Irish came alive and out-shot Woodbury 19-6. Natalie Deeg scored a pair of goals and Kristen Reuter added one in her final game. Reuter, Humble, Alex Sirek, Anndrea Hughes and Alex Malecha all provided assists during the late-game run.
Goaltender Rachel Carlson finished with 34 saves.
