Girls golf: Three make all-conference team
The Rosemount girls golf team finished sixth in the final South Suburban Conference standings and placed three golfers on the all-conference team.
The Irish finished fifth, fifth and fourth in the three SSC meets players were able to complete this year. Sophomore Monica McDonald was the team's top scorer in two of the three meets and tied with senior Molly Flynn for the team lead with an 84 in the third meet May 23 at Rich Valley Golf Club.
Junior Molly Reber shot an 85 at Rich Valley, Ashlee Humble had a 90 and eighth grader Gretchen McDonald had a 93. Ninth grader Jessica Peterson shot a 94.
"We're definitely moving in the right direction," coach Barry Wallin said. "We've got some girls who are making great strides. Monica McDonald has been consistent in the mid-80s. Molly Reber, Molly Flynn and Monica's sister Gretchen McDonald has been a pretty solid force at the 1-4 spots."
Monica McDonald, Flynn and Reber all scored well enough to wind up on the all-conference team. Gretchen McDonald and Humble both earned all-conference honorable mention.
The Irish were scheduled to open section tournament play Wednesday at Phalen. The second day of sections will take place at Bunker Hills. Wallin knows section play will be challenging, but he was optimistic last week.
"There's five or six very solid teams," he said. "We're going to need to play our best golf of the year to make day two. I like how we're positioned to do that. We certainly have enough talent and depth to play well and get to day two as a team."
