Girls golf: Keeping scores low
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Word is quickly spreading about the Rosemount girls golf team.

The Irish are posting solid scores, and several golfers are involved in the scoring. The news has certainly reached the other Lake Conference coaches.

"The Apple Valley coach remarked, 'Your kids are all shooting 45 or better,'" Rosemount coach Barry Wallin said. "I just smiled. And actually, it was the Eagan coach that relayed that to me."

Wallin's team has been posting strong scores in Lake Conference competition and currently sits in second place in the conference standings. The Irish are 6-1 and have a 173.5 scoring average. Eastview is in first place and has posted a 172.7 average.

Last week at Valleywood, Rosemount shot a 165 to beat Chaska (175) and Apple Valley (176).

"That's some good shooting, really good shooting," Wallin said. "I'm quite pleased with the consistency of our kids. We had five out of six under 45 at Valleywood. That's a good day for us."

The 165 total is also the Irish's top finish at Valleywood in several years.

Rosemount's Molly Flynn and Katie Berkopec tied for second individually. Each shot a 40.

Emily Holtz carded a 42 and Hailey Johnson added a 43.

The Irish finished so well that Betsy Wallin's solid round of 44 couldn't even make it in the team scoring, as the top four scores count to the team total.

The Irish are tied for second with Eden Prairie, but own the tiebreaker after winning the head-to-head competition. The Lake Conference tournament is next week at Oakdale golf club.

"I like our chances," coach Wallin said.

Johnson is currently fifth in the conference with a 42.5 scoring average. Betsy Wallin is ninth with a 43.5 average and Holtz is 16th with a 45.1 average.
