Girls golf: Flynn ties for 42nd at state
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

There's a word Molly Flynn uses when things are going well on the golf course, a bit of nonsense that doesn't mean anything outside the ranks of the Rosemount High School golf team.

The word is Merm! and the Irish junior had several opportunities to use it at this week's state golf tournament.

Flynn shot an 88 on each of the tournament's two days to finish in a tie for 42nd place.

Flynn was 32nd with a two-day score of 172 at last year's state tournament.

Flynn had a rough start to her tournament this year, which coach Barry Wallin said wasn't unusual. Several girls struggled early on Tuesday. About the sixth hole, though, Flynn started to turn things around.

"She just really changed gears and just played solid golf from there on," Wallin said.

Flynn was eight over par through five holes on Tuesday and was seven over par for the remaining 12. She sank a 25-foot put on the seventh hole that Wallin said helped settle her down, then hit a huge shot over a bunker from a tough lie on the ninth. Wallin said Flynn had two easier options for that shot, and while he discussed those options with her it became clear pretty quickly what Flynn wanted to do.

"She just got the look in her eye," Wallin said. "I knew she had decided."

Flynn shot a 46 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine Tuesday and followed that up with a 45 and a 43 on Wednesday. Wallin said he was happy with Flynn's performance.

"She really hung in there," he said. "She played well."
