Joanne Cope gives service to God any way she can. If she gets to spend some time with friends and have a few giggles while doing it, all the better.

Cope is one of more than 40 volunteers who toiled hundreds of hours this week to put together the Rosemount United Methodist Church fall garage sale, which started Sept. 15 and runs through the Sept. 17.

The money raised through the sale supports the church. It's a big job putting the massive garage sale together but a dedicated group of members gladly does it. Those who can't give their time help by donating food for the volunteers.

"A lot of hours are donated here but it's fun," said Cope.

Deb Cimino, one of the organizers, said during the early part of the week congregants emptied their garages and basements and dropped off donations for the sale.

Contributions packed the Family Life Center and tables were stacked high with items such as Mickey Mouse coffee mugs, pop corn boxes, books and more.

"People are generous," said Cimino.

Volunteers rummaged through all the donations and put individual items in the appropriate places. Things are clearly marked and put into organized sections including clothes, kitchen utensils, party supplies, shoes, hats and more.

While going through the items the volunteers have some fun. Muriel Barnes and her neighbor Pat Peterson enjoyed trying on hats.

"I think my head is too big," said Barnes.

Meanwhile Cope had fun hanging up some square dancing dresses, complete with bloomers.

"Won't you look at this?" said Cope as pulled out the dresses.

While the event supports the church, Cimino said it also strengthens the congregation. She said the event is a good way for people in the congregation to reconnect with each other or to get to know new people.

"It takes a lot of people to make this event happen and it's a great for us to get to know each other through it. It's a great way to connect," said Cimino.

In addition to helping the church the sale also helps a number of other groups. Everything that is left over gets donated to various groups around the Twin Cities including the Salvation Army.

"Nothing is wasted," said Hanne Wondercheck, a volunteer.

The church holds two annual garage sales, one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall sale started Wednesday and will run through Friday. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday. Everything will be half off Friday or shoppers can fill a grocery bag with items for $5.

"It's really a great event. I think the community looks forward to it," said Cimino.

The church is located at 14770 Canada Ave. W. Call the church for more information call 651-423-2475 or visit the web site at www.rosemountumc.org.
