Football, Week 2: Irish defense stifles Burnsville, 38-7
By the end of Friday night's season opener at Irish Stadium, the only question was whether Rosemount would complete its first shutout since the 2009 season.
The eighth-ranked (Class 5A) Irish allowed Burnsville a late touchdown, but still rolled to a 38-7 South Suburban Conference victory.
Senior quarterback Nate LeMoine ran 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and the Irish, now 2-0, led the rest of the way. After Burnsville turned the ball over on downs on its first possession, the hosts drove the ball 74 yards on 10 plays to set up a five-yard scoring run by senior Andy Gustafson.
The teams traded punts on the next two possessions, setting up a short field for the Rosemount offense. A couple of short runs and a 21-yard completion to Charlie Broback set up a 37-yard field goal, which Logan Lindberg drained with 10 yards to spare to make it 17-0 midway through the second quarter.
Lindberg's 17-yard scamper on a fake punt set up Rosemount's final score of the first half. After two runs and an incompletion, Lindberg received the long snap out of a punt formation and rolled right, turned the corner and dove across midfield for a first down. That play sparked a nine-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass from LeMoine to Tyler Liermann to make it 24-0.
LeMoine added another over-the-shoulder touchdown lob to Broback on the first drive of the third quarter. Backups Sam Broback and Connor Griffin took the rest of the second-half snaps.
Burnsville's first eight drives resulted in five punts, two turnovers on downs and an interception by Micah Marshall.
