Football: Late touchdown lifts Irish to win
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

The Rosemount football team had a few more reasons than normal to look forward to the opening game of the season.

Any team would be excited for a fresh start to the season. The Irish were excited to begin.

They then went out and made sure it was a truly fresh start.

New Rosemount quarterback Chase Vogler hit Zachary Vraa for a six-yard touchdown with just 41.8 seconds left to give the Irish a 17-14 season-opening win last week at Lakeville South.

The last-minute excitement took on added significance because Rosemount had lost the past two games between the two teams. Lakeville South beat the Irish in the Class 5A state semifinal two years ago, and spoiled Rosemount's home opener last season.

"For us, we were just not pleased with how we represented ourselves on offense last year," coach Jeff Erdmann said. "Our offensive line is further along than it was last year. We didn't have any turnovers. We didn't have those little penalties. We got two turnovers ourselves. Our special teams were fantastic. You are going to win a lot of games if you can do those things."

Of course, Vogler and Vraa's game-winner couldn't have happened without a couple of key plays and players.

Before the last-minute touchdown, Vogler connected with Garrett Glaus on a 40-yard pass to get the Irish in scoring position.

The defense also did its job, holding Lakeville South scoreless in the second half, and shutting it down on two key defensive series late in the game.

Rosemount was able to pin Lakeville South deep in its own territory and forced the Cougars to punt with 1:24 on the clock, setting up the last drive.

"We bent a bit, but did not break," Erdmann said. "It was a game of field position. Our special teams did a good job of pinning them deep, and getting us good field position.

Glaus even added his own touchdown in the first half with an interception return for a score.

Rosemount hosts Burnsville today for its first home contest.
