Financial planning seminar coming to Rosemount
In 2005, Derrick DeWilde and his wife Becky took Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. The young couple had undergone a lot of changes, including getting married, having a baby and buying a house.
While they weren't in danger of bankruptcy, Derrick said the couple found themselves "struggling" so they took the course for the first time.
"We figured we couldn't go anywhere but up," said Derrick.
The course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success.
Years after they first took the course, Derrick said it was one of the best decisions the couple made. Through several moves and other big life events, they have implemented the financial principles Ramsey has been teaching since 1994. To refresh themselves with the principles, they have gone through the course several more times.
"It's one thing to know what you should do. It's another to do it," said Derrick.
A year and a half ago the DeWilde family moved to Farmington and started attending City on a Hill Church in Rosemount. The church has put an emphasis on reaching out to the community and Derrick said providing the Financial Peace University is one way to do that.
"This is something we can provide that is a real, tangible benefit to everyone in the community," said Derrick.
The course meets once a week to hear a different from Ramsey on DVD, followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing.
While the course teaches common sense approaches to money, Derrick said it also provides valuable information about financial products.
"The content is applicable to anyone," said Derrick.
Starting Sept. 22, Derrick will coordinate the nine-week course from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Waterford Commons Clubroom. To give people an idea of what to expect a preview session will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 in the clubroom.
