From employee to owner
When Kerry Winters decided to become a dentist, she knew someday she would want to own her practice.
When the opportunity fell into her lap late last year, that dream was realized.
Winters has been the sole dentist at Dakota Children's Dentistry for the last several years, so when the owner approached her last year about buying the clinic, it was an opportunity she couldn't turn down.
Winters took ownership Jan. 2 and Winters Pediatric Dentistry was born.
The office offers specialty dental care for youth from infants to teens. Winters said she tries to make dental care easy and enjoyable to set a good tone for dental care throughout her patients' lives.
The office features a child-friendly environment and an experienced staff who knows kids.
Winters said the benefit of a pediatric dentist for children is that they are in kid mode all day. Winters said they also use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide care for the unique needs of children.
Winters has worked in Rosemount as a pediatric dentist since 2006. She said she likes working with kids and she prefers their honesty.
"The kids are honest about what they're feeling. I would rather have them be honest," said Winters.
Overall, she said working with kids is fun and she's helping forge a lifetime of good habits in them.
"We try to work with the kids and show them going to the dentist doesn't have to be bad," said Winters.
In the future, Winters hopes to expand the practice and possibly open a satellite office. But for now she's getting used to her role as boss.
