Divas and Denim offers children's clothing and a whole lot more
Linda Satriano worked as a legal secretary for 30 years. Two years ago, she and several others were offered buyouts. Satriano wasn't ready to retire, so she didn't take it.
In the back of her mind, though, she knew her days with the company were coming to an end. So, Satriano asked herself what she would do if she got laid off.
After doing research on different businesses, Satriano decided she would like to open a children's consignment shop. They generally do well, and as a grandmother it seemed like a good fit.
When she received her layoff notice in November, Satriano quickly went to work starting her own business. Last week she opened Divas and Denim in downtown Rosemount.
Originally, Satriano wanted to open just a children's store named Kylie's Closet. But the money just wasn't there. She needed partners to make it possible.
After talking with two women who were interested in renting space with her, she agreed to name the shop Divas and Denim. In its new form, the shop offers a hodgepodge of items including consignment children's clothing and equipment, women's clothing, jewelry and housewares.
Out of Denim and Divas, Boomer Groves and Roxanne Tolle sell jewelry, Dana Smith sells women's clothes and Angela Bosaaen sells specialty children's items.
It's a good fit for all the parties involved, and Satriano hopes they can be successful together.
Before opening last week, Satriano put a lot of work into the house where her shop is located. Denim and Divas is located at 14670 S. Robert Tr.
To get the shop ready, she cleaned, painted and decorated. While it was a lot of work, Satriano said she's happy with the way the space turned out.
The shop is in the former location of Shamrock Animal Hospital, so there are a lot of little rooms. Satriano used the rooms to her advantage and styled each to represent the items in it. In the front, Satriano displays children's items such as games, toys and a crib. A bright yellow room shows off racks of baby clothes. A pink room with flowers on the wall holds a selection of toddler girl's items and a blue room contains boy's toddler clothes. Shopping from room to room feels like walking through a boutique.
"I'm pleased and excited. I hope it's a concept people will accept in the community," said Satriano.
A consignment shop, the store carries brands from Old Navy to higher-end brands such as Baby Gap. Satriano said she is accepting children's items.
While her first few days in business weren't especially busy, Satriano said she got a lot of good responses from the customers who did come in. It also gave her the chance to work out some bugs.
As word of the store's opening spreads, Satriano she hopes people will come in and check out what she has to offer.
"We have a lot of cute stuff."
While starting a new career is hard, Satriano likes what she's doing. She especially likes the five minute commute. Satriano has lived in Rosemount for seven years.
"It's not really like work. It's fun," said Satriano.
