District ACT scores top state average
District 196 high school students in the class of 2008 scored well above state and national average composite scores on the American College Test entrance exam according to test data released nationwide last month.
The ACT average composite score for the District 196 class of 2008 was 23.8, the same as the previous year. The district average is 1.2 points higher than the state average of 22.6, which is up 0.1 from last year. (ACT scores range from 1 to 36.) The Minnesota average is highest in the nation among states where more than half of all college-bound students took the test. Among those 26 states, Iowa is second at 22.4 and Wisconsin is third at 22.3. The 2008 national average is 21.1, down 0.1 from a year ago.
In District 196, the ACT average composite score is based on the results of 1,746 students who took the test, which represents nearly 79 percent of the graduating class of 2008. The ACT is the primary college entrance exam taken in Minnesota and throughout much of the Midwest, and the SAT Reasoning Test is the primary exam taken by students on the East and West coasts.
