Members of Dakota County United Educators representing the 2,100 teachers and school nurses in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District ratified a new, two-year contract agreement with the school district in a membership vote held Dec. 5. The ratified agreement will be presented to the school board for final approval at its next regular meeting Dec. 12.

The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2011 and runs through June 30, 2013. It provides for step and lane (years of service and education attained) increases in both years of the contract. In year one there will be no increase to any salary schedule and in year two there will be a 1 percent increase to the top step of the pay schedule and the longevity schedule only.

A first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree will earn $36,592 under the contract this year, while an experienced teacher with a master's degree at the top of the schedule will earn $66,395 in base salary and up to $6,993 in longevity pay next year, after the 1 percent increase.

Teachers will continue to pay the same portion of their health insurance premium in both years of the contract. The total cost of the contract over two years is 4.1 percent more than the previous contract, including all costs for step and lane increases, the schedule increase in year two and health insurance costs in both years.

"I am pleased that we have a settlement that fits within our budget parameters, reflects our current economic situation and will continue to keep us competitive in attracting and retaining the best teachers," said Superintendent Jane K. Berenz.
