Diamond Path and the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District’s other two magnet schools have been recognized as schools of distinction in previous years, and all three were recognized as schools of excellence this year. But for Diamond Path this year’s recognition was extra special.

Diamond Path has a focus on international studies and offers Chinese and Spanish language programs for students.

Magnet Schools of America chooses the top five magnet schools from among its schools of excellence. Three of those schools receive additional awards. Diamond Path was one of those three schools this year.

“That was quite an honor,” Diamond Path principal Lynn Hernandez said.

Hernandez said judges look at test scores, how well the school’s theme is integrated into classrooms and extra events when they evaluate schools. Schools fill out a 12-page application and submit a video of activities in the building. Once the top five schools are chosen, members of the Magnet Schools of America board pay them a visit for further evaluation.

There were 330 schools considered this year.

“To be in the top five of over 300 schools, I think, is a testament to the teachers, the students and the parents, our community as a whole,” Hernandez said. “I think everyone involved with children in our Diamond Path community gives 110 percent and I was very proud to accept that honor.”

As part of the recognition, Diamond Path received a $1,000 prize. Hernandez said there is no plan yet for how to spend that money.

The district’s magnet school program is eight years old.
