Dakota County Sheriff's deputy Joshua Williams will serve a 30-day suspension and work at least a year of courtroom security for his role in a fatal accident last August.

Williams, who will also have to undergo training in emergency vehicle operation, received the penalty following an internal investigation by the Dakota County Sheriff's Department.

Williams was found guilty of careless driving for his role in the accident that killed Farmington resident Bill Wallace. A Scott County judge sentenced him to serve 40 hours of community service speaking to new drivers and law enforcement training programs and to pay a $380 fine. He also had his driver's license suspended for one year.

Williams was assigned to court security following the accident, which happened he made a U-turn in front of Wallace on Highway 3. Williams, who was in the final stages of a training program was responding to a call at the time of the accident and was having trouble finding the home he was looking for.
