DCTC students, staff team up for a healthier campus

Sometimes peer pressure can be a good thing. Over the next six-weeks, students, staff and faculty at Dakota County Technical College will challenge one another to focus on achieving a more healthful lifestyle.

Assistant director of student life Tom Cross said for the second year the college campus will conduct a fitness challenge to motivate people associated with the school to get healthier.

“The big thing we want to do with the fitness challenge is to promote good health and activity,” said Cross.

Teams of four will gain points for healthy activities such as exercising, eating well, not using tobacco products, demonstrating good dental hygiene and drinking water. While some will no doubt try to lose weight, Cross said the overall goal is to promote making better lifestyle choices all across the board.

Cross said the fitness challenge offers participants an opportunity to focus on themselves in a positive way. The team aspect of the challenge helps by providing built in encouragement and accountability.

Six teams participated in last year’s fitness challenge, mostly made up of staff and faculty. This year, Cross said the school has done more to encourage student participation.

The program will conclude May 1 with the Healthy Knight 5K and an awards ceremony. Prizes will be given out to the top teams and individuals who participate in the fitness challenge.

While the fitness challenge is just for DCTC students and staff, the Healthy Knight 5K is open to the public. The 5K will take place at 5 p.m. May 1 on the DCTC campus.

For more information about participating, call Cross at 651-423-8677 or email tom.cross@dctc.edu.
