A few hang ups have delayed the decision on a new executive director for the Dakota Communications Center, current director Kent Therkelsen said. So the board of directors will have to pick an interim director during their June 17 meeting.

Therkelsen's last day is June 30. He said vacation and business trips have slowed up conducting pre-employment background checks and leadership assessments on the final three candidates.

Therkelsen said the board will receive a recommendation for an interim director Thursday. He anticipates the board will make its final decision in mid-July.

The final three candidates for the job are John Dejung, Diane Lind and Russell Sinkler. The advertised salary range for the executive director is $85,000 to $125,000 .

Dejung is the director of a public safety communications center in Madison, Wis. In the past he oversaw 911 operations in Minneapolis from March 1997 to May 2009.

Lind has been the DCC's operations director since January 2007. Before that she was a communications supervisor at the Burnsville Police Station from 1992 to 2006.

Sinkler is an executive with Ingenix, a health care research company in Eden Prairie. He directed the Minneapolis emergency communications center from 1981 to 1984. He held a similar position in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Therkelsen, who led the opening of the center, announced his retirement in January.

Therkelsen plans to start a consulting company.

"In 2006 when I got involved with this I wanted to be part of a start up project. It's been my plan all along to leave when I felt that there was good operational stability," Therkelsen said when he announced his retirement.

The Dakota Communications Center opened in December 2007. The regional center serves Dakota County and 11 cities.
