Cross country: Boys defend South Suburban Conference championship

Rosemount brought in five runners ahead of runner-up Eastview's No. 3 runner as it defended its South Suburban Conference title last Friday at Eagan High School.

The Irish, ranked second behind Stillwater in Class 2A, scored 49 points to beat the ninth-ranked Lightning by 23. Tenth-ranked Burnsville was third with 98 points, followed by Lakeville North (105), Lakeville South (135), Bloomington Jefferson (173), Apple Valley (177), Eagan (200), Prior Lake (218) and Bloomington Kennedy (232).

Senior Nathan Rock led a parade of five Rosemount runners in the top 15 with a sixth-place time of 16 minutes, 39 seconds, on the 5,000-meter course. Teammate Trevor Capra was ninth in 16:55, Chandler Dye came in 10th in 16:57 and Calvin Lehn crossed the finish 11th in 16:59.

Nick Couillard provided the team's fifth counting score, crossing the finish line 13th in 17:09. Tyler Blumke (18th, 17:16) and Sam Ivanecky (22nd, 17:24) also finished in the top fourth of the 89-runner field.

Rosemount finished in the middle of the pack on the girls side, scoring 137 points to place fifth out of 10 teams.

Lakeville South placed five runners in the top 12 in winning the meet with 39 points. Eagan edged Prior Lake 71-83 for runner-up honors.

Sophomore Hannah Grim paced the Irish with a 10th-place time of 15:31 on the 4,000-meter course. Freshman teammate Liz Evenocheck reached the finish line seven seconds later to earn 13th place.

Junior Taylor Rambo gave Rosemount three runners in the top 20 with a 17th-place time of 15:49.

Tori Grund (46th, 16:36) and Taybri Irving (51st, 16:43) rounded out the team's top five.

Lizzie Thooft (53rd, 16:47) and Emily Davis (56th, 16:58) also competed.

The Irish are back in action next Wednesday at the Section 3AA Championships at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights. The boys team is gunning for its sixth state tournament berth after finishing third at the Class 2A State Meet last fall in Northfield.
