The Irish boys, ranked fourth in the state’s first Class 2A rankings, fell 31-24 to an alumni team featuring several current and former collegiate competitors. 2012 graduate and current St. Olaf College runner Calvin Lehn won individual honors, topping the field of 89 runners with a time of 9 minutes, 47 seconds that was just off the two-mile course record.

Other alumni to crack the top 10 were 2013 graduate Trevor Capra (third, 10:12), Hamline University runner Nathan Rock (fourth, 10:21), former Drake University runner Mike Bumgarner (sixth, 10:31) and school 4x800 record-holder Chris Mergens (10th, 11:04).

Junior Alex Berhe led the Irish varsity with a second-place time of 10:12. Sam Ivanecky was fifth in 10:31, Ryan Brumm placed seventh in 10:53 and seniors Ryan Condon and Cody Sedbrook crossed the finish line 8-9 in 10:58 and 10:59, respectively.

“Overall, I was pleased with our fitness at this point in the season. Five guys under 11 minutes is a solid early showing,” Rosemount coach Chris Harder said. “The group is going to be good this fall and there will be a lot of competition for varsity spots as the season moves along. To be contenders, we need two all-state caliber guys and three within sight as they make the final turn. It is one thing to be good, but another to be special. If they want a special season, they will need to step it up another notch.”

Nick Christensen was the top community finisher with a 13th-place time of 11:29.

Senior Hannah Grim took 20 seconds off her time from a year ago in defending her individual title and leading the Irish varsity to a perfect team score in a 15-57 win over the community team. Grim topped a record field of 66 varsity runners, alumni and community members.

Grim won the two-mile race in 12:26. Liz Evenocheck followed in 13:00, Sydney Regalado followed in 13:24, Briana Cleveland was fourth in 13:30 and Naomi Alvarez rounded out the top five in 13:59.

Natalie Narloch was sixth in 14:03.

“The varsity team got out aggressive and had six girls 14:03 or better, which is very encouraging at this point in the season,” Harder said.

Michaela and Carol McLaughlin were the top alumni finishers with matching times of 14:21. Sara Delgado was right behind as the top community member with a ninth-place time of 14:34.

George Grunklee won the two-tenths of a mile kids race in 1:11. Delany Schultz was right behind in 1:12.

“The presence of a record number of alumni, community members and a handful from the tennis team helped make the evening very festive,” Harder said. “Having 48 total alumni runners participate this year was a lot of fun. They are still a huge part of our program — very supportive and encouraging.”
