County attorney names murder suspect
Sixteen-year-old Dakota Cheyenne Butler has been officially charged in connection with the stabbing death of his 17-year-old classmate.
Police believe Butler and Cody Casey got into a fight Thursday afternoon in front of Butler's home on Dallara Ave. Butler was armed with a six-inch serrated knife. Casey reportedly had a sock with a rock in it.
Butler stabbed Casey several times before an older brother pulled him away. Casey rode his bike about half a block to the corner of Dodd Boulevard and Shannon Parkway before collapsing. Witnesses called for help from the nearby Rosemount Fire Station and flagged down a passing police officer. Casey was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Butler made his first appearance Monday in Dakota County Juvenile Court. A certification study will be conducted and he will appear again at 9 a.m. May 19.
Butler's older brother, Zachary Butler-Martinez, has been charged with aiding an offender for reportedly hiding the knife (see related story).
"It is very sad and disturbing to see a youth using a deadly weapon like this to resolve a dispute," county attorney James Backstrom said. "This was a senseless killing that could easily have been avoided."
