Werner, a Rosemount resident and a captain with the Burnsville Police Department, was chosen earlier this month for the position. The other finalists for the position were Rosemount Lt. Jewel Ericson and Apple Valley Captain Michael Marben.

On Tuesday the council approved the hiring of Werner and authorized his starting salary of $105,000.

Before voting on the resolution, council member Matt Kearney thanked staff and the volunteers who interviewed all the candidates for their time and service.

Werner has worked in law enforcement for 24 years, starting in a suburb of Chicago and moving to Perham before coming to Burnsville 13 years ago. He has been a captain since 2004 and has helped oversee a police department budget of approximately $12.5 million. Johnson pointed out after the interviews were over, that is larger than the city of Rosemount's roughly $11 million general fund budget.

Werner holds a bachelor of arts degree in organizational management from Concordia University and a master of arts degree in police leadership and administration from the University of St. Thomas.

After the Aug. 6 interview conducted with all three candidates Werner was the clear front runner. He was the top pick for four of the council members and tied with Ericson at the top of Kim Shoe-Corrigan's list.

During his interview, Werner said he expects he will be able to step into the job with some level of comfort. He already knows some of the department's officers, and he has served on committees with Ericson.
