For a kid, there isn't any day much better than Halloween. Candy, games and costumes make for a good time.

For any parent who's tried to dress their goblin or ghoul, though, the fun takes a hit from the sticker shock of buying a new costume.

The Rosemount Parks and Recreation department hopes to help Rosemount families get cheap costumes by hosting a costume exchange.

The idea is, if you donate a costume, you get one back free of charge. So last year's vampire can be a fairy princess this year.

"Kids grow so fast, and unless there are younger siblings to wear them another year, the costumes are useless after a single season," said parks supervisor Lisa Maurer. "We got the idea from Apple Valley and hope to get it going."

Maurer said the Apple Valley exchange has seen some success and gets bigger every year.

While she knows things might be a little slow this year, Maurer hopes that as the word get out the exchange will grow in popularity.

Resident turn in costumes in the next couple of weeks and then can claim one on exchange days held Oct. 15 and 16.

Left over costumes will be given to 360 Communities for kids in need.

"We see this as an inexpensive way to reuse old things and to help the community," said Maurer.

Residents can drop off clean children's costumes at the parks and recreation office in the lower level of the community center, 13885 South Robert Trail, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from now through Friday, Oct. 8.

The costume pick up will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15 or 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Rosemount Steeple Center, 14375 South Robert Trail (formerly St. Joseph's Church).
