Community bike ride will benefit North Creek Greenway

Valley Bike and Ski has put on a community biking event for the last four years to increase exposure to cycling in Apple Valley. This year they want to highlight the work Rosemount has done to become more cycling friendly, so route planners created a loop that goes through town.

"We want to show off the great improvements Rosemount has made in becoming a more bike friendly community," said Jeff Milbauer, president of Valley Bike and Ski.

The Valley Bike and Ski Community Bike Ride will take place from noon to 4 p.m. May 20. The ride will begin in the Minnesota Zoo Puma parking lot. Participants can follow two routes a 12-mile loop more suited for families or a new 30-mile route that will include Rosemount.

To ensure safety of the youngest riders, the 12-mile route will include a police escort. Milbauer said they have had riders as young as 4 or 5 participate.

"It's a family fun ride and a great way to get out in the community," said Milbauer.

As an avid rider himself, Milbauer said it's important to teach people the benefits of cycling. He said cities are realizing the economic and environmental benefits of becoming more bicycle friendly. This event is meant to get people out taking advantage of it.

The cost is $12 per person or $20 per family. The price includes a goody bag that will contain a $2 off coupon the zoo, ride support, snacks and hydration. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Helmets are required.

Proceeds from the event will help the future of cycling and other trail activities by benefiting the North Creek Greenway Trail. Dakota County has developed a concept to create a 200-plus mile corridor system. The North Creek Greenway will connect Lebanon Hills Regional Park to the Vermillion River in Farmington.
