Column: Go easy on your feet during the summer
While attending graduation parties and shoppipng during the hot weather, I noticed people of all ages wearing summer sandles and flip flops. Most of them were those cute, fun sandals and only a few had any arch support.
I thought of our trips to Mexico many years ago and the colorful plastic sandals we bought. We had one pair to match each outfit. They were cool, comfortable and cute. It wasn't until years later I learned how important it was to wear flats with support and cushioning.
My leg joints started to crunch and crack. I felt discomfort in my heels and balls of the feet. Now 40 years later I realize how important that support is. I should have worn them for fun once in a while instead of most of the summer.
Over the years I've learned sandles are atire during the summer. It's OK to wear the fun ones once in a while but for a more permanent attire wear those made of leather or canvas with a heel and cushion.
It's important to wash your feet often as moisture causes blisters, infections and athlete's foot.
If you wear flip flops or sandles, remember to wash them off before going in the house or on carpet. After walking outside at a pool, on the sidewalk or public rest rooms, it's easy for staph or e-coli infection to remain on the footwear. Best to leave them by the back door to dry.
Summer is so short in Minnesota and sandles so very popular. With a little precaution you can enjoy them and still keep your feet and legs happy for many years to come.
