Candidate declares for county board race
Hastings City Council member Mike Slavik announced Tuesday morning he will run for the Dakota County Board of Commissioners. The District 1 seat, which represents Coates and Empire Township, will become vacant next year, as incumbent Joe Harris has announced he will not seek reelection.
Knowing that there would be a vacancy pushed Slavik to put his name forward.
"It was really something that, upon Commissioner Harris' announcement, I started to seriously consider," he said.
The election is more than a year away, but because District 1 is currently the largest in the county, covering 23 townships and cities, he said he wanted to give himself ample time to meet with residents across the district.
