Business, faith and benefits
A person's faith affects just about every aspect of their life including how they do business. Realizing that, Community of Hope pastor Per Nilsen wanted to offer a way for people in Rosemount to connect their faith and business. He started a quarterly event, and nearly four years later the Christian Business Persons Breakfasts are going strong.
Nilsen said the gatherings provide an opportunity for Christians in the business community to share best business practices and information, bring one another support and encouragement, and grow in their understanding of how to best apply their faith within the context of their unique business situation.
Nilsen said he felt called to start the gatherings to bring Christian business people together for prayer, support and encouragement.
Three things that motivated him, Nilsen said, were that much of the early Christian movement occurred in the marketplace; he believes there needs to be a more significant integration between business leaders and the church; and many Christian business people find themselves feeling isolated.
The breakfasts are held quarterly at Rudy's Redeye Grill. Each gathering features a keynote speaker who is a Christian and actively involved in the business community. Past speakers have included Paul Ridgeway, Ridgeway International; Suzie Larson, author/speaker with Focus on the Family; Doug Cole, Cole's Salon; Jeff Siemon, Former Minnesota Viking; and Kurt Bills, a teacher and Rosemount City Council Member.
Bills said he has attended several of the breakfasts in addition to the one he spoke at and enjoyed them.
"I think it's a wonderful way for people to network," said Bills.
Nilsen said on average the gathering draws about 50 people. The next event will be held at 7 a.m. Jan. 22 at Rudy's Redeye Grill, 14845 S. Robert Tr. Nilsen said breakfast ends promptly at 8 a.m. to honor the schedules of those in attendance.
Dave McIver will be the featured speaker. McIver works for Praise FM a Twin Cities radio station. The title of his talk will be "Are you listening or talking to yourself?"
There is a prayer gathering at 6:15 a.m. to pray for the city, the government, personal prayer requests and for God to be glorified through business endeavors.
