Boys track: Track team gains experience during 2nd-place finish
Senior Chandler Dye was part of both of Rosemount's first-place finishes during a second-place team showing at last Tuesday's Prior Lake Invitational.
The Irish scored 96 points, well off the pace of meet champion Blaine's 143 points. Prior Lake (84), Burnsville (80) and Roseville Area (58) also competed.
"I think we continued to get some good experience. We're still in the mode of trying to figure out who will round out our varsity spots in several events," Rosemount coach Jay Hatleli said. "There's a lot of competition from within."
Dye nabbed his first gold medal in the 800-meter run where he clocked in at 2 minutes, 3.82 seconds. He closed out the meet by joining Conor Manning, Kyle Johnson and Charlie Broback for a winning 3:34.41 clocking in the 4x400 relay.
Rosemount scored second-place finishes in three other events. The 3,200 found three Irish in the top four as Nathan Rock (second, 9:51), Calvin Lehn (9:53) and Nicholas DeJean (9:54) all broke the 10-minute barrier. In the 1,600, Sam Ivanecky and Austin Rudoll supplied a 2-3 finish with times of 4:58 and 4:59, respectively.
Manning added a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles, where he clocked in at 42.10.
The Irish nabbed third place in six other events, including the 4x800 and 4x200 relays. Two more came in the field events, where Ryan Vick cleared 11 feet in the pole vault and Sean Kalinowski soared 19 6 1/2 in the long jump. Salih Mohamed added a third-place 11.53 in the 100 and Uwezo Bushiri finished third in the 400 in 54.70.
Other point-scoring performances came from Payton Otterdahl in the shot put (fourth, 45-01), Johnson and Eric Heimendinger in the 400 (fifth and sixth), Preston Webb and Mohamed in the 200 (fifth and sixth), Darrell Hunt in the 100 and triple jump (sixth), Stephen Sawyer in the 110 hurdles (sixth) and the 4x100 relay (fourth).
"I think we've established some depth in the sprints and jumps," Hatleli said. "I'm hoping to see consistency in the next few weeks before we get into the championship portion of the season."
