Boys track: Another meet, another title
After putting all of its efforts into winning the True Team Class 3A state title two weeks ago, the Rosemount boys track and field team had little time to prepare for last week's South Suburban Conference Championships.
Irish coach Jay Hatleli wasn't sure how much his team would have left in the tank to compete last week. He knew Rosemount's athletes would likely be tired after chasing the dream of a True Team state championship.
Evidently the Irish had enough left to handle the South Suburban Conference.
Rosemount won five events on the way to winning the conference team title with 169 points. Apple Valley was second with 109 points.
Myles Phillips took third in the 100-meter dash and added a runner-up finished in the 200. Andrew Hausmann followed Phillips across the line in the 200, placing third.
Hausmann added a victory in the 400 and was fourth in the triple jump. Goaner Deng supported Hausmann's top finish in the 400 by placing third in the event.
The Irish dominated in the distance events, as they've done all season.
Chandler Dye won the 800 and was followed by teammates Sam Temple in second and Chris Mergens in third.
Shane McCallum won the 4x200 and finished as the runner-up in the 1,600.
Henkemeyer crossed the line in third in the 1,600. Nathan Rock placed seventh and Calvin Lehn finished eighth in the event.
Rock added a third-place finish in the 3,200 with Lehn placing sixth. Henkemeyer was just off the scoring pace, finishing ninth.
Rosemount's Shane Ringkob was fourth in the 300 hurdles with Conor Manning taking eighth.
The Irish finished as runners-up in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Mergens, Deng, Hausmann and Phillips teamed up in the 4x200. Mergens, John Evenocheck, Temple and Dye combined in the 4x400.
But with Deng, Evenocheck, Temple and Dye together, Rosemount was the first team across the line in the 4x800.
Phong Dovu finished third in the long jump.
Joe Bjorkund won the shot put with teammate Brandt Berghuis finishing as runner-up.
Berghuis added a third-place finishing in the discus. Ben Rossini took seventh.
The Irish take part in today's Class 2A, Section 3 preliminaries at Lakeville South. The finals are scheduled for Saturday at Lakeville South.
