Boys Tennis: Team season ends for Irish in second round
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Rosemount boys tennis coach Jeanne Ewen said there was a difference in her team entering this season.

The Irish program continues to progress, and the development could be seen early on as Ewen and the coaches didn't have to spend as much time on the basics during practice, and could concentrate on adding more to the players' repertoire.

For the third straight season, the growth can be seen in Rosemount's finish in the Lake Conference.

In 2008, the Irish moved up one spot in the conference standings. In 2009, they made another move up with a final 3-7 record in the conference.

"When I came in we had one win, then we got two, and this year we had three," Ewen said. "We're getting there. You can see the improvement. We have more depth. Now we need to take that depth and play more in the offseason. And we have the leadership to do that. We're doing exciting things. We are able to compete."

Rosemount won its first section tournament game for the second straight year, beating Simley 5-2 on Monday. The Irish earned the section's No. 10 seed. Simley was seeded 12th.

However, the team season ended for Rosemount in the second round with a 5-2 loss to No. 7 seed St. Thomas.

"We didn't get any answers in singles last night," Ewen said. "They came off and were frustrated with how they played. We did our best. St. Thomas also beat us earlier in the season, so they're the better team.

"Our singles have been pretty good all year. Our 1-2-3 singles guys came off frustrated. They weren't able to do the things they wanted to do. That's what happens against a good team."

Skylar Milne earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Brandon and Nic Clobes added a 2-6, 6-4, 6-6 (7-5) win at second doubles, the first time this season they have won a third set in a tiebreaker.

Against Simley in the opener, the Irish swept singles play.

Chase Vogler won 6-4, 6-1 at first singles. Michael Huffstutler won didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Matt Baker wasn't far off of Huffstutler's pace with a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles.

Milne won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Sean Hatlen and Will Holcomb added a 6-0, 6-4 win at third doubles.

"Simley tried to load up in one and two doubles," Ewen said. "We played well. The guys were fired up."

The season continues next week with the individual section tournament.

Huffstutler and Baker will compete in singles play.

Vogler and Milne will team up in doubles play, and Stuart Hatlen and Jason Warweg will continue to play in doubles action.
