Boys tennis review: A hope for more improvement
If there is one thing Jeanne Ewen tried to do during her time as Rosemount boys tennis coach, it was build the program.
Ewen worked to improve the number of players, worked to improve the talents of the players, worked to improve the facilities for the players and, overall, worked to raise the awareness of the program for the Irish.
This past season was just the latest example of the growth.
Rosemount took seventh in the Lake Conference this season, finishing with a 9-7 record. One of the biggest highlights was when the Irish beat St. Thomas, 4-3.
"The kids played hard and the win really represented how hard the kids had been working this spring," Ewen said, adding more highlights of the season's resume. "Matt Baker competed well in the individual section."
Baker was the bright spot of the section tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals before losing to Will Biernat, an eventual state qualifier.
As a team, the Irish beat Park, 5-2, in the first round of the section tournament, but dropped a 7-0 score to No. 2 seed Apple Valley in the next round.
Baker, a junior, earned all-conference honors. Senior Jason Warweg, sophomore Matt Stefanko and ninth grader Sean Hatlen were all-conference honorable mention.
"The team is hoping to have another strong season next year with several returning varsity members," Ewen said.
