Boys swimming and diving: Irish beat Prior Lake
First-place finishes by Sheldon Hatlen in the 50 freestyle and Daniel Monaghan in the 1-meter dive gave Rosemount the lead and the Irish went on to a 93-91 South Suburban Conference dual win over Prior Lake Friday night at the Rosemount Middle School pool.
Prior Lake held the lead for the final time at 26-20 after a 1-2 finish in the 200 individual medley. Hatlen followed by pulling away to first place with a time of 21.56 in the 50 freestyle and teammates Kyle Bodine and Derek Schnoor nabbed third and fourth, respectively, to tie the score at 31-all.
Monaghan then racked up 243 points in the 1-meter dive and Gareth Estabrook placed second, giving the Irish a 43-35 advantage.
The Irish then pulled away, scoring three straight first-place finishes. Hatlen posted a margin of victory of nearly three seconds in the 100 freestyle, Noah Peterson swam five flat in the 500 freestyle and the foursome of Andrew Urness, Bodine, Sam Kendall and Hatlen won the 200 medley relay by over four seconds. The eight points for that first-place finish gave the home team an 81-59 lead.
The Irish closed out the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay. Urness, Bodine, Kendall and Hatlen combined on a victorious time of 3:24.26 to win by over six seconds.
Other runner-up finishes went to the 200 medley relay, Ben Peterson in the 100 butterfly and Urness in the 500 freestyle.
The team held its final home meet Tuesday night against Lakeville South and won't compete again until the Section 3AA prelims Feb. 20 at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake.
