Boys lacrosse: Irish eyeing more revenge

Rosemount got to exact a little revenge while playing its way back into the Section 3 semifinals Friday night at Irish Stadium.

The sixth-ranked Irish gained control of the game early against Burnsville and rolled to a 13-10 victory over a Blaze team that knocked them off 14-13 in last year's section tournament.

"It was sweet revenge," Rosemount coach Lance Kuehn said. "It's nice to know we're back in the sweet 16, essentially, in the state. It's good to be there."

Even more sweet for the Irish would be an upset of their own against fourth-ranked Eagan. The two teams squared off again Wednesday night in Eagan in a rematch of a game the Wildcats won 15-8 back on May 8. Kuehn is hoping the return of injured players Grant VanOverbeke and Logan Lindberg can make a big difference this time around.

"We're excited to have our full roster back," he said. "We've been looking at film and we had people go to their section game against Prior Lake. We feel like we know them and we know their key players. We know their chess moves and now we're going to counter those moves. Hopefully they won't expect our new moves and we'll come out on top."

The Irish started strong against the Blaze, earning a 5-1 advantage in the first quarter. The lead allowed Kuehn to give his bench plenty of playing time and seven players ended up scoring goals.

VanOverbeke and Carter Yepsen led the way with three goals apiece and Lindberg and Alec Hall each scored twice.

Goaltender Chase Olson stopped eight shots as the Irish improved to 12-3.

Nine different players found the net and the Irish racked up 40 shots on goal in a 17-1 opening-round win over 14th-seeded Hastings last Wednesday at Irish Stadium. Carter Yepsen tallied four of the goals and Chris Peterson and Matt Weller added three apiece.

Weller also supplied a team-leading four assists. Conner Yepsen (one goal) and VanOverbek (two goals) each added two assists.

Olson faced just four shots and stopped three.
