Boys Hockey: Rosemount earns playoff win after tough finish
Rosemount Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

There had to be a certain bit of satisfaction this week for the Rosemount boys hockey team.

The Irish have had more than their fair share of disappointments this season, whether it be injuries, close losses or blowout losses. And the wins haven't come enough to soothe many of the wounds.

But, as bad as things have been this season, Rosemount wasn't given the section's lowest seed come playoff time.

In fact, in Tuesday's 8-9 matchup, the Irish were the host team.

Given the No. 8 seed in the section tournament, Rosemount was awarded a home playoff game against No. 9 Henry Sibley.

And Tuesday, the Irish had a playoff win.

After a disappointing end to the season, Rosemount beat Henry Sibley 4-1 on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 2A, Section 2 tournament.

The seedings, and ultimately, Tuesday's result went just how Irish coach Scott Macho thought they would.

"It's just nice to get a win," Macho said. "(The seeding) went how I thought it would. I thought a win or two at the end of the season and we could have been pushing for a seven seed. We ended up right where we thought."

"I think clearly we were the better team (on Tuesday). We have a little more talent on our side. We outshot them and had a ton of scoring chances. We buried the puck when we needed to, but if we buried all of our chances, the number could have been bigger."

The Irish scored three goals in the first to take the commanding lead.

Brady Loew scored twice in the game, and Jared Newman and Mike Cossalter also tallied goals. Grant Weierke and Andrew Anderson each had two assists.

Justin Franks made 14 saves in goal for Rosemount.

The regular season ended with an 11-2 loss to Burnsville last week

Ben Carlson and Loew each scored goals. Cory Pederson had two assists.

The Irish were set to face No. 1 seed Woodbury on Thursday. Results were not available at press time.
