After one week of practice, Rosemount boys hockey coach Scott Macho can sense a different atmosphere around his team this year.

After a two straight tough seasons, the Irish are taking a new outlook for the new season.

"We're really excited," Macho said. "We've had a good time. All the coaches have just had a fantastic time working with the kids so far.

"There's a big attitude change than the couple teams the last couple of years. It's a very hard working group of guys. They're positive. They want to learn and they are taking everything we give them and running with it."

Rosemount opens the season Saturday with a home game against Rochester Century.

Macho believes healthy competition is also bringing the best out of the players.

"For the first time in a while, we have a substantial amount of kids healthy and competing for varsity spots. They are fighting for spots between varsity and JV."

Promoting the positivity this season will be the two captains, senior forward Mike Cossalter and junior forward Andy Gustafson.

Thecaptains will lead a relatively inexperienced crew of forwards.

The Irish return most of their most experienced players on defense.

Goaltenders Hank Fairchild and Justin Frank are both back as seniors. The defense includes seniors Connor Langfield, Mack Goodrich and Joe Kearney, and juniors Reese Richards and Ryan Gould.

"We have a large portion of the defensive corps coming back," Macho said. "We do have a lot of seniors, but really only a few that got significant varsity playing time last year. The rest of the guys are good, hard working kids that worked their way through the program."

At least early in the season, will rely on its defense and experienced goaltending.

"I think that just about any team wants to shore up their defense as quick as possible," Macho said. "We've got a lot of returners back there and senior goaltenders are always a big help. Our biggest thing will be learning to score this year."
