Boys hockey: Irish net third place at Heritage Classic
The Rosemount boys hockey team got its offense going last weekend at the Heritage Holiday Classic.
Coming off a three-game losing streak where they scored a combined five goals, the Irish netted 13 goals in three games while placing third out of eight teams at Heritage Sports Center in Duluth.
Lukas Gillett's hat trick paced the Irish in a 6-3 first-round win over St. Louis Park last Thursday afternoon. Gillett scored goals in all three periods, with the third pushing the lead to 5-3 at the 10:33 mark of the final period after St. Louis Park had closed within a goal. Tom Linder iced the game with a power-play goal (assists to Nick Swanson and Zach Bichler) in the final 40 seconds.
Austin Anderson and Justin Crowell also scored goals for the Irish, who had a 37-16 advantage in shots on goal. Goaltender Tom Fraune stopped 13 shots.
The Irish once again had more shots than their opponent in the tournament semifinals, but 12th-ranked (Class 1A) Duluth Denfeld broke open a tight game with three goals in the final four minutes to skate away with a 4-1 victory.
Anthony Winters scored Rosemount's lone goal on the power play late in the second period.
Austin Leslie started in net and stopped 24 shots.
The Irish closed out the tournament with their first shutout of the season, a 6-0 blanking of Owatonna in the third-place game on Saturday. Leslie finished with 26 saves.
Six players scored goals: Crowell, Bichler, Linder, Anderson, Ryan Foley and Nate Sackett. Gillett, Winters and Andrew Glad each had two assists.
The Irish, now 4-7 overall, are back on the ice tonight in Bloomington against 12th-ranked (Class 2A) Jefferson.
