Boys hockey: Gustafson leads Irish to first SSC win
The Rosemount boys hockey team outshot Bloomington Kennedy 42-18 while securing its first South Suburban Conference win of the season 4-2 Thursday night at Bloomington Ice Garden.
The Irish (4-12) fell behind 1-0 after allowing a first-period power play goal, but senior forward Andy Gustafson tied the game back up with a goal 30 seconds into the second (assist to Ted Schultz). Five minutes later, a power play goal by Austin Anderson (assists to Luke Meade and Anthony Winters) gave Rosemount a 2-1 advantage.
Zach Bichler opened the third with an unassisted goal for Rosemount, and after Kennedy scored to make it 3-2, Gustafson sealed the game with his second score (assist to Bichler). Gustafson and Ryan Anderson lead the team with seven goals apiece this season.
Goaltender Tom Fraune stopped 16 shots as the Irish pushed Kennedy's losing streak to five games and ended their own skid at four games.
The Irish were back in action Saturday and managed to put just 11 shots on the net in an 8-1 loss to the Blaze at Burnsville Ice Center.
Burnsville led 6-0 before Austin Anderson got the Irish on the board 10:44 into the third (assist to Ryan Anderson).
