Boys hockey: Cougars rush past Irish
When the Rosemount hockey team has struggled this season, slow starts have often been a problem.
The team started plenty fast Saturday at Lakeville South – taking leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first period – but still couldn’t keep pace with the Cougars in a 7-5 loss at Hasse Arena.
“We couldn’t hold off their No. 1 line. They had five goals,” Rosemount coach Brad Stepan said. “They beat us on the rush with some odd-man rushes that we didn’t do a very good job adjusting to. Those pucks ended up in the back of our net.”
South scored two goals in the final minutes of the first period to draw the score even at 3-3, and then took the lead with a power-play goal in the first minute of the second. Luke Gillett tied the score back up with his second goal of the game, but the Cougars found the net again to make it 5-4 heading into the third.
“Gillett and Ryan Foley have been two of the best in the conference the last 3-4 weeks,” Stepan said.
Gillett completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal that made it 6-5 with 1:05 to go, but South sealed the win with an empty-netter with 26 seconds left.
Nick Hart played between the pipes for the Irish and stopped 36 shots on a busy night.
Andy Glad and Peyton Norder each scored first-period goals for Rosemount, now 6-9-1 overall and 3-71 in the SSC. Foley, Nick Peterson, Justin Crowell, Tyler Frank, Charlie Weiand and Spike Burkard each tallied assists.
